The history of the discipline of obstetrics and gynecology dates back to 1962, when, within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, headed by professor A. Kocerghinschi, the specialization course of obstetricians-gynecologists (led by Associate Professor A. Baţac) was organized. In 1963, S. Bilinchis was appointed head of the course.

Subsequently, the course operated at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology No. 1 of the Faculty of General Medicine (head of department - Gh. Paladi, university professor), being fronted by Associate Professor L. Siniţina. In 1980, Associate Professor O. Corlăteanu, elected by competition as head of the Course of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Refresher Medical Training (FPM), took the helm.

In 1986, based on the Course, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the FPM (headed by Associate Professor P. Roşca) was founded. It was headquartered at Maternity Hospital No. 2, and, in 1988, transferred to the clinical base within the Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (fronted by E. Gladun, university professor).

In 2009 the department was merged with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Residency). It was renamed the Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology (Faculty of Continuing Education in Medicine and Pharmacy), and Olga Cerneţchi, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, university professor, became head of department. Professor O. Cernetchi managed to build a competent team of well-known professionals, including Gheorghe Paladi, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, academician of the ASM, university professor, Professor Emeritus of the Republic of Moldova and Eugen Gladun, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, corresponding member of the ASM.
